A ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON MENTORING AND
LEADERSHIP SKILLS ORGANIZED BY AFRIGROWTH FOUNDATION IN
COLLABORATION WITH NATIONAL UNIVERSITIES COMMISSION HELD AT VIRTUAL
LIBRARY BUILDING NUC, ABUJA ON THE 26TH OF MAY, 2009
The workshop started at about 10:30am with the introduction of
guests, followed by opening prayers from both Christian and Muslim
participants. The chairman of the day Professor J.D Amin apologised
on behalf of the NUC for starting behind schedule, he said the
Opening Ceremony will commenced as soon as the Executive Secretary
joins us from the other programme taking place simultaneously at the
NUC Complex in order not to waste time. He continued by introducing
the first paper Mentoring and Leadership Concept presented by Remi
Adeyemi, President, Men and Mentoring International, Lagos. In his
presentation, he gave an insight to the concept of mentoring by
telling the Spartan story on what they became and how they came
about achieving it. He mentioned that mentoring has been with us for
a long time and that it starts from the family which is just a means
to an end. He continued by saying that mentoring should be embraced
by the NUC since that’s where the quality of citizenry is determined
which thus determine the growth of a nation.
Furthermore, he pointed out that Nations that have imbibed mentoring
in their culture experience massive growth and huge development.
Also, he stated that the Small and Medium scale Enterprise [SME] is
the main economy booster of the develop countries, which grew into
conglomerates overtime. He encouraged the participants to embrace a
structured system of Mentoring and Leadership in our Universities
putting into consideration some values which include;
• Economic Value of vision
• Value System
• Recycling of Values
